USB Slip Rings

USB slip rings for unlimited possibilities. Even if many people only know the USB port from chargers and data sticks, this PC standard can do much more. It is no coincidence that USB means nothing less than “Universal Serial Bus System”. This means that today there is practically no end device that cannot be supplied with power or data via a USB port. In addition, USB ports also offer the possibility of an interface for wireless data transmission. Bluetooth, infrared, radio or light line – with a USB port, the whole world is open to you. With the USB slip ring, you can now also accommodate this international standard on rotating modules.

USB transfer according to USB 1.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 and USB 3.2 standards with up to 20 Gbit/s.

Closed design or with hollow shaf

We manufacture USB slip rings in an enclosed housing or, on request, with a hollow shaft. The hollow shafts can have different diameters.

Different housing materials to choose from

The housing material for USB slip rings is selected in consultation with our customers. From plastic to stainless steel, there are many options available, including combinations. We would be happy to advise you on the various options in this area.

USB socket directly in the housin

We can provide either cables with USB sockets or USB plugs in various lengths as connection options, or mount the sockets directly into the housing (as shown in the picture).

Torque support for fixing the stato

To secure the stator side of the USB slip rings, we include a torque support as standard, which can be screwed to the housing. Alternatively, we can make other modifications to the housing to provide the customer with a different type of form-fitting connection. We would be happy to advise you on the various options available in this area.

Functionality of USB slip rings

Ultimately, a USB contact is also nothing more than a completely normal current feed-through. Regardless of whether data or (to a limited extent) power current is to be passed on, nothing changes in the proven slip ring-brush technology in the USB slip ring. The familiar USB ports are attached to the rotor and stator of the slip ring housing. It is true that there are only very few applications that really require permanent rotation from a USB end device. However, there are all the more applications where a swivelling USB feed-through can simplify certain situations considerably. Until now, this was only possible with cables, where there was always the risk of twisting. This creeping winding of the cable always ends in breakage or tearing. With the USB slip ring, however, the connection always remains relaxed and fully available at any angle of rotation.

The compact and high-strength housing is made of aluminium. The integrated drive tab is also made of this proven metal. This makes the USB slip ring corrosion-resistant. The drive tab transfers the rotational movement of the application to the slip ring.

The USB slip ring can be rotated in either direction. With a wide selection available, you are sure to find the right USB slip ring for your application. The IP51 protection class makes the slip ring resistant to dust and splash water. If you require a higher level of protection, please contact us. Selection of USB slip rings

We can offer you USB slip rings with up to 36 passages. Every USB slip ring complies with USB 2.0 class. However, they are also backwards compatible. If you have applications that require USB 3.0, please contact us. We will find a suitable solution for you in this case as well.

Our USB slip rings can transmit both signals and power feedthroughs up to 20 amps. The maximum operating voltage is 440 volts for both direct current and alternating current. Voltage peaks of up to 500 volts at 50 hertz can be absorbed. The maximum electrical noise is 10 milliohms. With an insulation resistance of 1000 megaohms at 500 volts DC, each of our USB slip rings is well equipped to handle unexpectedly high loads.

With up to 600 revolutions per minute, the USB slip ring leaves nothing to be desired in terms of dynamic load. A maximum of two USB feed-throughs can be integrated. Each USB slip ring can be loaded from -30 °C to + 80 °C. If your requirements fall outside this temperature range, please let us know. We will find the ideal solution for you.

Installation of the USB slip rings

The installation of the USB slip rings is as easy as with any other of our slip rings. Once you have installed it in its place of use, you only need to connect the incoming and outgoing cables. The cables are marked identically on both sides so that confusion is impossible. With an exactly centric positioning, you permanently avoid the possibility of a drill.

Use of USB slip rings

The great strength of the USB slip ring lies in its ability to connect devices with USB ports in a rotatable manner. The major advantage of USB ports is their widespread use. All you need is any end device, such as a sensor or camera, and a USB cable. With the USB slip ring, you have complete freedom of movement in your application. In addition to the permanent installation of a USB application, USB slip rings are also perfect for maintenance and inspection of end devices.

If, for example, you are using a fast-rotating sensor with its own control unit, you can check it directly at the pivot point using a USB diagnostic device or supply it with new software. The USB port makes these slip rings extremely convenient and versatile in their application.

Maintenance of the USB slip rings

The USB slip rings require no maintenance apart from occasional external cleaning. They also cannot be dismantled due to their complex and very sensitive inner workings.
